Interview with Sam Moffie
Author of NO MAD
Author of NO MAD
Why and when did you become a writer?
Sam: I believe that I always was writing. It took a near death experience (being a victim of a hit and run) in 2006 to put it all together.
Did you find inspiration for NO MAD and its characters, from real life?
Sam: Some are part of real life. The majority are made up.
Is writing a passion or a chore; do the words flow onto the page or do you have to work at it a bit?
Sam: Both passion and chore. It isn't easy, but when it's all done and people like the work -- then it's worth it.
Does music play a big part in your life?
Sam: Yes. Bob Dylan is the biggest, but Bob has enough going for him, so I thought others deserved some attention.
I have to ask, do YOU drink Newman’s Own Virgin Lemonade?
Sam: No question about that. I enjoy it so much, I had to work it into the main character's personality. Plus, Paul Newman had just died and I am a big fan of his as an actor and a man of giving.
What inspires you to write?
Sam: I like telling a story.
Tells us about the books that you have written and had published thus far?
Sam: Swap was my first. It's about baseball players who actually trade their wives/lives. However, it was a first novel and could have used better editing. The Organ Grinder and the Monkey was my second. It's the darkest of my imagination thus far. It's my muse's favorite.
In your opinion, what are the benefits and drawbacks of being a self-published or POD author?
Sam: I don't see any drawbacks, because the publishing world has changed and continues to change. It's all about marketing yourself, which with venues like yours -- I can attempt to do. There is a larger drawback to being a fiction writer, because it seems everyone is scrambling for vampire books, werewolve books, religious books and of course diet books by celebrities.
What would you like your fans to take away from your books?
Sam: That I tell a good story with quirky characters... and I like to kick authority in the tush.
Is there anything else that you would like to share with your readers and fans?
Sam: My fourth novel The Book of Eli will be out in January 2010.
